DEEP-SEA FISHING

SPORT IN THE NORTH SHARKS ON WHALES’ TRAIL. AUCKLAND, May 11. Now that the whaling season has commenced off Cape Brett, deep sea anglers who contemplate visiting Otehei Bay during the winter months should have no .difficulty in landing with rod and line a thresher, mako, or hammerhead shark, for many of these monsters are now to be seen. Thresher sharks are the whale’s greatest enemies and lie in wait for them as they move northwands. It is a thrilling sight to sec a whale fighting for dear life with these sharks, which lash the whale with their long tails until it is beaten. Last week, some fine specimens of sharks were seen in the vicinity of Cape Brett. The kingfish, which is capable of giving an angler an even greater thrill than its cousins of the deep is a fish not to be despised, and can be caught at any time of the year. A party of fishermen visiting Piercy Island had plenty of sport landing these fish, which weigh up to 751bs.
