OHAKUNE

• BOBOUGH COUNCIL [ From the *' Chronicle’s ” Special Correspondent. ] The first meeting of the newly elected Borough Council was held on Thursday evening. There were present: The Mayor (Mr G. Goldfinch) and Councillors Christie, Craven, Clemett, Cody, Herbert, Jones, Mahony, Trevor and Taylor. The Ruapehu Rugby Sub-Union wrote requesting permission to wait upon the Council with reference to im- | proving the playing area on the Ohakune Domain. The secretary of the ! Union waited on the Council and stated |that his Union was willing to bear half the cost of any improvements —It was agreed that the necessary work be done immediately under the supervision of the works committee. Mr T. Herbert wrote with reference to the diversion of the stream running through Ohakune Junction—The matter was referred to the works committee. An application from the proprietress of the Argonaut Hotel asking that discount be allowed on her electric light account, which had inadvertently been unpaid by the specified date was not granted. Mr A. P. Smith wrote drawing the Council’s attention to the bad state of the footpath in front of his house in Tohunga road —Referred to the works committee with power to act. It was also left to the works committee to deal with a small grader, particulars of which had been supplied by the Franklyn County Council. The Rangataua Timber Company wrote with reference to the removal of a small mill house to Ruapehu road in the Borough.—The clerk was instructed to supply information. The proprietors of the two picture theatres forwarded statements of takings at Sunday night pictures during the month. There was a debit balance of 3/9 on the Patriotic Hall pictures and a credit balance of £1 0s 6d on Dyer’s Hall. An application for a billiard room license was granted to C. Lane, but the application of W. H. Paynter was refused. In accordance with the report of the Borough inspector it was agreed that an inspection he made of the fire escapes in the various boarding houses and hotels in the town, and that Cr. Taylor confer with the Borough inspector on the matter. A recommendation by the works committee that the Railway Department be approached with reference to the supply of scoria to the Council was agreed to. It was agreed that the electric engineer be requested to atend the conference of Electrical Supply Authority and Engineers, at Wellington and that the engineer be authorised to purchase three tons of crude oil when required. It was decided that a substantial reduction be made in the rental of the Council’s house at present occupied by the Town Clerk and electrical engineer, subject to the rescinding of the motion regulating the rental adopted by a previous Council.

The reserves committee recommended the planting of trees in some of the Council’s reserves, and the matter was referred back to the reserves committee to obtain full information. It was agreed that tenders be invited for the supply of motor spirit, and that the works committee have power to accept. Cr. Craven again brought up the subject of the state of certain footpaths at the Junction, and was informed that the borough employees would attend to the matter shortly. The Mayor’s action in granting metal to Mr Foster of Tohunga road was approved. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The annual meeting of the Ohakune Presbyterian Church (which also embraces Rangataua, Karipi, Horopito, Potaka, and Orua) was held in the church on Wednesday evening and was presided over by the Moderator, Rev. E. Bandy, of Taihape. There was a good attendance and Mr Bandy expressed, great pleasure at being present. He also welcomed the new minister, Mr T. G. Shilton and trusted the congregation would support him as loyally as they had done his predecessor, Mr Nicholas. The moderator also congratulated the congregation on the unusually large proportion of young men among those holding office and was sure that this inidjcated a healthy state of affairs and must be most encouraging to the new minister. Reports were then submitted by Mr Shildon, Mr J. G. McGregor (session clerk), Mr W. Allen (secretary), Mr H. W. Pearce (treasurer), Mr N. Christie (Sabbath school), Mrs W. Hiskens (Ladies’ Guild), Miss M. French (Young Women’s Bible Club) and Mr J. Randle (Young Men’s Bible Class-, all of which were adopted. The reports all showed that the church’s various activities were in a healthy state and reflected most favourably on the loyalty and enthusiasm of its office bearers and members. Grateful recognition was accorded the efforts of the Ladies’ Guild, and the devoted services of the Sabbath school teachers, organist, and choir members were warmly appreiated. At the conclusion of the meeting supper was provided.
