BURIED TREASURE
HIDDEN IN FOWLHOUSE MAN WHO DISTRUSTED BANKS. [Per Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. A story of buried treasure and money buried in a fowl-house was told in ihu Magistrate’s Court to-day. Mary Eliza Sturgess, aged 77, a widow of Sumner, claimed from Peter Haglund, her nephew, to recover the sum of £192. She cltiimed that uer husband, who had once lost money in a bank failure and then refused to trust banks, had buried £lB5 in a fowlhouse. After his death she fell ill, anl was removed to hospital. At this time, she declared, Haglund dug up the treasure and also took other cash, totalling £7, a gold wtitch and other property. Haglund’s story, told in his evidence, was that he dug up the money at Mrs. Sturgess’ request, that there was only . £B5 there, and that he expended £35 for Mrs. Sturgess. He preferred £5O in Court in settlement. Tho Magistrate accepted defendant’s evidence and found accordingly.
