AN ADVERSE REPORT
THE P.A.T.A. INQUIRY
COMMITTEE’S RECOMMENDATIONS TO GOVERNMENT [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTOiX, >pril 28. I Holding that the Proprietary Articles | Trade Association is a combination dei trimental to efficiency in distribution, i likely to unduly encourage the credit ' system, dangerous to th c public interest i and general retrogressive, the majority ' of the committee of inquiry appointed by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (the Hon. A. D. McLeod), has recommended the Government to arrange, if necessary, for the making of regulations to prevent the Association from operating in New Zealand. The member who dissents contend? that the public interest would not bo ■ adversely affected by the operations of j the organisation, and that any Governi ment attempt at suppressing it would be difficult to enforce and would hamper the business of the manufacI turer and trader. i The report was considered to-day by • Cabinet, and was released for publica- ; tion by Mr McLeod. ■ The committee consisted of Messrs W. B. Montgomery, ex-Controller of Customs, W. K. Hayward, manufacturer of Dunedin, M. J. Reardon, workers’ representative on the Court of Arbitration, and J. W. Collins, secretary to the Department of Industries and Commerce. Mr Hayward was the dissentient.
