FAMILIAR HYMNS

SUNG AT FOOTBALL MATCH UNUSUAL INCIDENT IN ENGLAND. Received April 17, 5.5 p.m. (A. & N.Z.) LONDON, April 16. The strains of a familiar hymn, sung by 40,000 people, surprised the inhabitants of the houses surrounding th© Tottenham Hotspur football ground on Good Friday. The directors had arranged community singing, and the conductor invited the crowd to sing “Abide With Me.” The vast concourse sang wholeheartedly and reverently, with impressive effect, and also gave “Land of Hope and Glory” and the National Anthem. The incident is interesting, as clergymen of all denominations throughout the country had been protesting against professional football on Good Friday. The protests were unavailing, but the authorities agreed to release players with religious scruples.
