LEAGUE MANDATES
THE QUESTIONNAIRE AUSTRALIA SETS OUT OBJECTIONS. GENEVA, March 9. The Council of tho League of Nations considered the mandatories comments on the Mandate Commission’s formidable questionnaire. Australia emphasised that extended Council supervision on the Commission’s advice had never been set out precisely. The Commonwealth was of opinion that neither the Council nor the Commission had the right to interfere in any way with administration or to direct a mandatory in detail Tho Commonwealth had always complied with the requirements to supply yearly information of its work under specific heads, but tho questionnaire resorted to a minuteness of detail inconsistent with the terms of the Covenant or the purposes for which the Commission was act up. Tho adoption of the questionnaire would make the mandatories’ position, if not untenable, at least most difficult and onerous. The Commonwealth considered it would be unwise for the Council to adopt the questionnaire. The Council, after a brief discussion, remitted tho questionnaire with the mandatories’ comments, back to the Commission for further consideration.
