MUNICIPAL THATRE Of all the characters Harold Lloyd has portrayed on the screen, possibly none is as appealing and as subtly drawn as his part of Harold Lamb rn “College Days” which has its first I screening in Wanganui at the Ope*-a House to-night. Lloyd was popular ns the craven of “Grandma’s Boy,” tlio Lcheer doctor of “Dr. Jack,” the stuttering Lothario of “Girl Shy,” and the meek husband of “Hot Water. •’ The new production will be screened until Friday and there will also be n screening on Saturday afternoon. There is no need to dilate upon the merfts of Lloyd as a comedian, for undoubtedly he is one of the biggest comedy stars in the world to-day. In the supporting cast Harold Lloyd has severaf popular players. Jobyna Ralston rs leading lady, and others in the cast arc Brooks Benedict, James Anderson, Hazel Keener, Joseph Harrington ana P. J. Harmon. The comedy is directed by Sam Taylor and Fred Newmeyer. The theme of the story tells of a new boy at a well-known college who is anxious to become popular. He prepares by imitating heroes of fiction and the movies in manner and clothes and in consequence, does not achieve his object. Mainly through the assistance of a girl friend, the new student ultimately makes good, and in the most important football match of the year, becomes hero. Harold Lloyd stands today as a leading exponent of clean and wholesome comedy, and there is no doubt that “College Days” is a suitable film for every family. Reserves are procurable at H. I. Jones and Son’s. Richard Talmadge Feature, With “College Days” a special Richard Talmadge comedy-drama, “The Fighting Demon,” will be shown. Lured into South America on the promise of a position as a safe and vault expert, Richard Talmadge runs the gamut of comedy and thrills as only this stunt star can do. He finds the position is the somewhat unethical business of opening other people’s safes and vaults, and after his discovery embarks upon a thrilling campaign of disturbing gangsters. A cast of popular players supports Richard Talmadge. MERMAID’S MARDI GRAS The executive committee of the Merry Mermaid’s Mardi Gras met last night and conducted a considerable amount of business. It was intimated by several local organisations that they intended participating in the election of a Mermaid queen. The offer of the controlling body to refund one third of all voting money to the nominating bodies has been most favourably received as several bodies, in need of funds, realise the wisdom of taking advantage of such a splendid opportunity to replenish their coffers. Good progress is being made and an effort will be made to commence active operations in the campaign early next week. To make this possible, however, all nominations must be submitted this week. The Mardi Gras headquarters have been established on the first floor of the premises of the Merewether Motor Co., in Ridgway Street.
