AMUSEMENTS, MEETINGS, ETC.

HIS MAJESTY’S THEATRE I “Old Soak,” showing at His Majesty’s Theatre contains drama and comedy mixed in perfect proportion with a cast that sincerely portrays its parts. This is Jean Hersholt’s first starring vehicle and vindicates the decision of Carl Laemmle in starring a i character actor. Ndt only has Hersholt the big role in the picture, but he succeeds through the sheer artistry of his acting in gripping the attention of llie audience and winning their hearts by his presentation of the man’s weakness. The Old Soak’s weakness might as well have been anything—but liquor I is his weakness in this picture, George I Lewis and June Marlowe supply the j romance, Lewis being the son, and Miss ; Marlowe a chorus girl. Also showing is section B of the official picture of the tour of the Duke and Duchess of York. Specially selected items will be provid- ' cd by the Harris family. THE GRAND THEATRE i A tale as warm and tender as sunlight in Spain is the photodrama “ Tne ■ Girl From Montmarto,” which unfolded itself for the first time last nignt at the Grand Theatre. Indeed tne simile is not far-fetched when it is learned that the story is based on Anthony Pryde’s novel, “Spanish Sunlight. ’ ’ Romance ,thrills and laughter are crowded into the space of a few reels with dexterity. The plot chietiy concerns itself with the attachment of a girl of the shadows of Paris for aa English author of distinguished family. The jealousy of another suitor, however, threatens to disrupt the romance, but in the end everything turns out as it should. Barbara La Marr, portrays the role of the Spanish dancer. The wooing is effected by Lewis Stone. Robert Ellis, William Eugene, Bobby Mack and Mathilde Comont comprise a capable supporting cast. The supporting picture “The Isle of Retribution” is another big feature that should not be missed.
