ALARMING DEATH RATE
INFLUENZA IN ENGLAND NORTHERN COUNTIES SUFFER TRAGEDY OF THE EPIDEMIO [By Telegraph—Per Press Assn.—Copyright] LONDON, Feb. 21. Influenza is most severe in the NorKh of England, particularly at Liverpool, where the death rate is alarming. Undertakers in all districts are employing extra hands. Offices are often half staffed. Many schools are closed, and the workers in the mills and workshops are seriously depleted. There were at least three cases during the week-end of husband and wife dying practically simultaneously. A GENERAL DECLINE REASSURING REPORT. FROM THE HIGH COMMISSIONER; Latest advices from the High Commissioner re the influenza epidemic show a general decline in England and Europe. Provincial returns for the week ending February 12, give 159 influenza deaths in London. In 105 great towns, including London, there were 759 deaths, and in Greater London the deaths numbered 280. Pneumonic notifications in London were 2669, England and Wales (including London) 3096. There was a decrease of cases in Berlin and an increase in Bulgaria for the week ending February 5. There was a decrease in Copenhagen, but it is still widely prevalent in a mild form in Denmark, and was generally abating in Spain, France, Hungary, Poland, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
