SERIOUS FIRE
BLAZE AT TE KUITI WOMAN HAS NARROW ESCAPE (Per Press Associstion.) TE KUITI, Jan. 21. Two shops occupied by Mrs M. Gascogne, restaurant keeper, and A. C. Berccr, tobacconist, were almost completely destroyed by fire at four o ’clock this morning. A boarder sleeping in a detached building at the back of the restaurant noticed the fire and gave the alarm. The fire had a good hold on the buildings, which were old and very dry, and burnt fiercely. The upper storey of the building next door, occupied by A. W. Delly, confectioner, was scorched, but the efforts of the brigade and the absence of wind prevented the fire from spreading. Mercer’s stock, which was insured in the National Office for £425, was a total loss, also Mrs Gascogne’s furniture and effects which were insured in the State Office for £450. In addition Mrs Gascogne lost £lOO in cash, which she kept on the premises. She had a narrow escape in her night attire. The building, which was reduced to a charred shell was owned by F. Gough, a builder.
