OHAKUNE
HOUSE DESTROYED (From the “Chronicle’s” Special Correspondent.) A five-roomed house in Tainui Street owned land occupied by Air C. Berguson : was completely destroyed by fire early on Friday. The fire had <a firm hold when discovered, and the house being , some distance from the fire station, some time elapsed before the alarm w&s given. The brigade was promptly on the scene, but could do little. All the contents of the house were destroyed, and the family had some difficulty in escaping from the burning building owing to the density of the smoke when the outbreak wtis discovered. The building and contents were insured for a total of £Bl5 in the Victoria and Guardian offices. SCHOOL GAMES. Teams from the local schools visited Rangataua on Friday afternoon to try conclusions with the Rtingataua School at football and basket ball. Ohakune boys proved victorious in a well-con-tested football game by 14 points to 3. In the basket-ball game between teams of girls from the High schools of both centres, Ohakune won by 17 points to 12, whilst in the primary schools game Rangataua won by 14 to 4. GENERAL. Noticeable improvements have recently been carried out to buildings in the main street at Ohakune Junction. The painting of the Argonaut Hotel has decidedly improved the appearance of the building, and another good feature is the renovation of the Main Trunk Foundry. Attention, has also been turned to the thoroughfare by the Borough Council, and a coating of Tangawai grit has had the effect of giving the road a smooth surface, which has proved Capable of withstanding the heavy traffic that passes daily to and from the railway station. It. is pleasing to note also that Mr AV. L. Jones, of the Live Wire Clothing Store, is setting a precedent in concreting the footpath in front of his shop. Owing to this portion of the ptith being on the shady side of the street it was invariably damp. Owing to the closing down of one of the Fielding Sash and Door Company’s mills at Makaranui, a number of hands have been thrown out of employment. The complete destruction of a bouse by fire on Friday morning gives fresh point to the suggestion that has repeatedly been put forward that electric fire alarms should be installed at various points in the borough. Owing to the delay in giving the alarm, caused by the owner of the house having to proceed to the Fire Station, the house wins a mass of flames before the brigade arrived.
