“TRICKS THAT ARE DARK’ CELESTIAL FINED £lO. FOR ILLEGAL USE OF SCALES. This is the only protection that housekeepers have,” remarked Mr J. S. Barton, S.M.. when Willie Low, a Chinese vegetable hawker, was charged at the Wanganui Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning with having in his possession a set of pocket scales, which ' had not been stamped as required by the Weights and Measures Act. Inspector E. W. F. Gohns explained that the defendant was very evasive wbcr. questioned about the scales, but eventually admitted they were his. The scales were half a pound out, and were, not permitted under the regulations. Defendant had prcvously been fined £5 for a similar offence. The Chinese usually carried pocket scales. The Magistrate: “Tricks that are dark and ways that arc vain.” Il view of the fact that the defendant had been previously fined he was conv:<ted and fined £lO, and ordered to forfeit the scales.
