WIDE AND STRAIGHT

SOUTH ISLAND ROADS WANGANUI MAN’S IMPRESSIONS. The wide straight roads between Christchurch and Dunedin impressed a Wanganui motorist who visited the Exhibition in its closing stages. The roads, he said, bear ample quantities of shingle, and such a novelty as tar-sealing is apparently unknown. There are long straight stretches which tempt the fast driver, but hidden perils lurk in the form of dry ruts and watercourses which cross the road in several places. Crossing these at high speeds is dangerous. Officials told the Wanganui man that there had been a stupendous volume of motor traffic to and from the Exhibition, and on the outskirts of Dunedin traps for speedsters had exacted toll from many a visitor ’whose speed was over-high.
