KAITOKE SCHOOL PICNIC

A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. On Friday the Kaitoke School’s annual picnic was held on Mr Morgan’s property, when, in spite of the dull, threatening weather, the school children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. At about 10.30 a.m. quite a number of adults and children had arrived. Swings were put up under the trees and formed a groat source of pleasure for the children. Swinging, playing rounders, and other games took up the greater part of the morning, and the ground presented quite an animated appearance. Soon after 12 o’clock the scholars were assembled for lunch, which was served in the grounds surrounding the ruins of an old clay house that must have been erected in the early days of the colony. In the afternoon Mr Howard, chairman of the School Committee, the teachers, and some of the parents present carried out a programme of races and sports, which were much appreciated and enjoyed by the youngsters. Mr J. Wilson, of Holmwood Road, proved a very capable handicapper. All the junior pupils received prizes. The sports were just about concluded when the weather broke and heavy rain began to fall, somewhat marring what would otherwise have been a most enjoyable day. The picnic party now sought the shelter of the old ruin and the plantation of pines close by. Here an ample supply of refreshments was again supplied, after which, as the weather showed no signs of clearing, the party broke up and set out for home. Mr Howard and his committee and the ladies who kindly attended to the catering of the picnic are to be congratulated on the success rewarding their efforts, and hearty thanks are due to them and to all who in various ways helped to make the outing so enjoyable for the children and all concerned.
