QUEEN ALEXANDRA BAND

FUND RAISING CAMPAIGN With a view to furthering the interests of the Queen Alexandra Band’s appeal for funds, a meeting of supporters and enthusiasts was held on Monday evening in the Jockey Club’s rooms. Mr C. Pearce presided over a large attendance. Mr G. Buckley said the large attendance augured well for the success of the Garden Party to be held on the Racecourse in aid of the bands funds, the proceeds of which would enable the band to attend the contest at Dunedin. About £2OO was required and no doubt this amount would be forthcoming if everyone put his or her shoulder to the wheel. He was grateful to the Jockey Club for/the use of the grounds, and to other supporters who had promised to help the function along. The chairman said they had met to organise for the Garden Party. He was sure that with the co-operation of the public the amount required would be an accomplished fact by the time the function was over. The Castlecliff Gala would have been a success, but for the atrocious weather that prevailed. Howveer. here was another opportunity for the citizens of Wanganui to show their appreciation, of the band. The band had served the city faithfully for years past in assisting every cause that was for the advancement and betterment of Wanganui. He was sure the citizens would do their part. The following committees were appointed:—Games.—Messrs. E. O’Meara, R. Hillgrove and W. Young. Procession: Messrs R. Bond, Grace, and Valentine. Ground: Messrs W. Valentine, A. Grace, R. Bond, G. Swan, Sampson, R. Marumaru. Mesdames Strawbridge and Myers. General ladies’ committee: All the ladies present at the meeting were appointed a general committee, with power to add to their number. Ticket sellers: Messrs Atkins and Humphreys with power to add. Stall holders.—lce cream: Mesdames W. A. Veitch and C. Pearce. Cakes and sweets: Mesdames A. B. Sharpe, A. Wylie and W. Nicholls. More stall holders will be appointed at a future meeting. It was decided to organise a mdnster procession in which the school children would take a prominent part. The procession would assemble at Taupo Quay and leave there at 1.30 on the day of the party and march up the Avenue to the racecourse. Messrs R. Marumaru, G. Buckley, and C. Pearce were appointed a committee to solicit the aid of the natives of the district. Mr J. Siddolls donated £1 towards the fund. Mr Larkin was appointed organiser of the children’s sports.
