There is no abatement of the hush fires which have been raging for some days on both sides of the Upper Murray River. The most serious outbreak is on the. New South Wales side between Wymab and Jingellic. The heat is terrific, and the whole country is as dry as tinder. PERIL ANP HARDSHIP FARMS AND TOWNSHIPS THREATENED MARCH OF THE FIRE FIEND MELBOURNE, Feb. 2. After a lull the bush fires in the Dandenong Ranges are again blazing fiercely. Reports from all centres tell of incalculable damage, including the loss of many homesteads and the narrow escapes of families. At Cockatoo nine houses were destroyed, and two at Emerald, which is completely isolated, telegraph and telephone communication being cut. off by the flames. The townships of Moe and Sutton Grange are at present threatened with demolition by the fires which are advancing upon them. The bush fires are now raging over the whole of the southern district from Albert to Canberra. They already have swept two hundred thousand acres of forest and pastures. A large number of fire fighters are out in all directions, but their efforts are futile, the flames rushing on before a high westerly wind.
