REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING FEDERATION IN GOOD CIRCUMSTANCES TRADE CONDITIONS DISCUSSED [Per Press Association.; DUNEDIN, Feb. 2. Delegates from Auckland, Wellington, Wanganui, Wairarapa, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, Invercargill (and Dunedin were present at the opening to-day of the conference of the New Zealand Federation of Master Painters, Decorators and Signwriters’ Associations. Mr W. A. Polson, Christchurch, presided. The delegates were welcomed by the Mayor of Dunedin. The annual report and balancesheet disclosed a satisfactory position, the credit balance being shown at over £236. Delegates considered that the report was highly satisfactory and paid tribute to the work of the executive. A report from the executive on standard prices was referred to a special committee representative of all the Associations. It was pointed out that the list was not intended to be a competitive one, hut to be used only in cases of disputes. It was decided that the executive should take steps to resuscitate or form associations and secure their affiliation. It. was decided to ask the Municipal Association’s Conference, which meets here on Thursday, to give support to a move to abolish the use of scrim for ceilings as unhygienic. The conference decided that as reports had been received that swinging stage regulations were being unreasonably and harshly interpreted in some quarters the Labour Department be approached to obtain a schedule of uniform requirements for the working of stages throughout the Dominion. The following •Christchurch remit was adopted: “That the Federation approach the Arbitration Court with a view to amending the scale of wages , to be paid to apprentices.”
