CURBING “JINKS”

PEERAGE MAY DO IT! IMPETUOUS M.P. LONDON, Dec. 11. A circumstantial report is current that the Home Secretary (Sir William Joynson-Hicks) and the President of the Board of Trade (Sir Phillip Cunlift’e Listerl are about to receive peerages, which traditionally involves the relinquishment of their offices. Sir William Joynson Hicks, whom the “ Manchester Guardian” in a. lead ing article dubbed the “ Minister for Class AVa.r, ” has been subjected to the most, bitter criticism for his impetuous speeches following the arrest of Communists, also during their trial. Paragraphists have stated that his actions have seriously embarrassed the Cabinet, while partisans have charged Sir William Joynson-Hicks with the much-criticised withdrawal of the Fascist! prosecutions last month. For some time he has been suffering from overstrain.
