NAPIER’S PROGRESS

DECREASE IN BANKRUPTCIES . BUILDING FIGURES INCREASE. [Per Press Association.] NAPIER, Dec. 24. The total value of 273 buildings for which permits were issued in Napier during 1925 was £138,162 4s, compared with 312 permits for work valued at £133,471 9s in 1924. In addition, right on the edge.of the borough but not actually in it, there have been erected two new schools, one primary a.nd one secondary, and numerous residences on reclaimed land recently opened for selection by the Harbour Board. New residences built, in the borough number eighty against 89 last year. Bankruptcies in Hawke’s Bay district during the year just closed number 23, compared with 27 in 1924, 53 in 1923, and 73 in 1922, thus showing a greatly improved position. Five of this year’s total failures were the result of creditors’ petitions. The total included five labourers, one Maori, one hotelkeeper, three in the building trade, two in the motor trade, and three land and commission agents. A satisfactory feature of the position is the complete absence of farmers among those who were unable to make ends meet.
