WHAKATANE FIRE

MUCH DAMAGE DONE. [Per Press Association.] WHAKATaNE. Dec. 24. A fire at. Matala early this morning destroyed a wooden business block in Main Street. The property and stock were valued at about £6500. The losses ore: Mrs. Lee's store and dwelling, insurance £1500; hotel storeroom, insurance £850; Mayo’s fancy goods store, insurance unknown; Alias Starger’s con font ion cry shop, insured, amount unavailable. A bucket brigade did good work and saved the hotel building, whinh was only fifteen feet from the burned storeroom. The hole! block was owned by W. Montgomery and Lee’s store by Burt Bros.
