RUBICON STILL BURNING SAWMILLING SETTLEMENT WIPED OUT. HEAVY DAMAGE CAUSED. MELBOURNE, Dec. 23. The Rubicon fire is still raging. The damage already amounts to over £lOO,OOO. The. sawmilling settlement at Alexander has been wiped out, tho inhabitants barely escaping with their lives. About 12,0 M) acres of seedlings from seven to eight years old are now threatened. It is stated that the fire started in one of the camps of the electricity commission and tho Forestry Department may claim for the full amount of the damage caused against the commission. Smaller fires in various parts of the State have caused heavy damage. LUMBER DESTROYED FIRES IN QUEENSLAND BRISBANE, Dec. 23. Serious bush fires in the Longreach district destroyed a large lumber stock. Extensive damage was done and several fire-fighters injured.
