ECHO OF THE WAR
SINKING OF THE HAMPSHIRE WITH LORD KITCHENER SUNK BY GERMAN MINE. AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT. Received Deo. 23, 8.25 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 22. The Right Hon. Bridgeman, in the House nf Commons, read a written roply from Mr. Waterhouse, apropos recent statements. The reply said: “It is untrue that the sailing of H.M.S. Hampshire with Lord Kitchener for Russia, was an open secret. The ship was not selected till ten days before she sailed, ami her course was not fixed till the. last moment. No mines had previously been reported laid nnar the Orkneys, but the Admiralty had no doubt that the Hampshire foundered as the result of striking a moored mine laid by U 75 in preparation for the battle of Jutland. “Furthermore, Admiral Scheer's report of the battle showed that U7shad been in that area.. The statement that
spies had previously been shot aboard the Hampshire was a wicked fabrication.’ ’
