NOVEL ATTRACTIONS

CASTLECLIFF GALA. Tn addition to the many amusing and interesting attractions usually met with at carnivals, several novelties will be introduced at the Castlecliff Gala, which commences on Saturday next (Boxing Day), on the playground area, next to the Kiosk. More than a dozen tents .form a canvas street, with the huge marquee in which the motion pictures, boxing tournaments and concerts will be held. One tent is being reserved for a ladies’ rest—in another the good fairy, ‘the spirit of the carnival’ will be ensconced in the “fairy dell.” Side shows and games of skill will in several instances be under canvas, while the stalls on the opposite side of the “street” are well protected from wind and weather, should such be unfavourable. A baby creche for the convenience of mothers wishing to leave the wee one for a while will be opened in Rangiora Street, next to Smith’s store, where the babies may be left under the care of a Plunket nurse for a nominal charge. Ice-cream and soft drink stalls will bo erected on the beach front, as well as on the Gala

grounds, the “big orange drink,” supplied direct from the orange counter in the Avenue will be on sale, and a quick-lunch stall should provide a boon. Of course, sweets, fruit, cakes, etc., will find a ready sale among picnic parties. The baby competition set down for Saturday next is already attracting much attention and the entries promise to be large. On Monday night a boxing tournament, arranged by Mr. T. P. Souter, and presented by the courtesy and under the control of the Wanganui Boxing Association will undoubtedly draw a large crowd. All the leading amateurs and professional boxers of the district will *ako part and a clover, clean exhibition that may be witnessed by ladies as well as gentlemen is assured. The Westbourne Choir will provide a special programme on Wednesday night, December 30; and on New Year’s Eve night a fireworks display will probably be tho main attraction. The treasure hunt is being run on now lines, and many other novel and amusing stunts will guarantee that not a dull moment will be experienced during the Carnival. As a preliminary, the committee, assisted by tho Swankers and other business men will invade the city to-night (Christmas Evo) with band, mock court and big value surprise packets.
