BULLS DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL (From the 1 { Chronicle’s’' Special Correspondent). The break-up ceremony and prizegiving of the Bulls District High School was held in Bulls Town Hall on Friday afternoon, there being a large attendance of parents and friends. Items were given by the pupils, those contributing being Meri Rewiti, Tom Pritchard. Irene Signal and Gerald De Burgh. Besides those receiving aggregate and attendance prizes every pupil was given a book of some kind. The prizes were presented by the chairman of the committee (Mr J. E. WalkeiT, assisted by the headmaster, Mr William Cron. BULLS TENNIS CLUB A team from the Bulls Tennis Club journeyed to Foxton on Saturday to defend the club’s title to the Newman Cup against Foxton. The match was rather unsatisfactory as several games were not played. Foxton captured the cup. after many unsuccessful challenges, by 144 games, 11 sets to 119 games, 9 sets. The visitors proved to be the winners on the day’s play and went home very well pleased with their day’s outing.

GENERAL NEWS The Oddfellows’ Hall was the centre of much happiness on Friday evening when the Lodge gave their annual Christmas Tree to the children of members. Many members attended, both of the Ylen’s Society and the Rebekahs, with their wives and children, and a most pleasant evening was enjoyed. During the evening Father Christmas

organised games and competitions and much fun was derived from the buneating, donkey-tail and the goat’s head. After refreshments had been handed ro”nd, Father Christmas presented every child with a present from the tree and after singing 41 Auld Lang Syne’’ all departed tired but happy at 11 o’clock. The many friends of Mr Alec Amon will regret to learn that be is seriously ill at his home in Lower Rangitikei. It is hoped that ho will make a speedy recovery.

Mr F. J. Mansell, who returned from [ a recent trip to the Dunedin Exhibition, has been indisposed for some time, but is now able to get about again. Mr F. Cutts, the well-known Town Clerk, has been reappointed secretary of Parewanui Dairy Company. The payment of this company last month was equivalent to Is 6Ad per lb (cheese). A further payment on last year’s supply was made to the suppliers. The payout for the Rangitikei Dairy Company for butterfat was Is sd. JACK COOGAN IN 4 4 OLIVER TWIST” ON THURSDAY NIGHT An outline was given yesterday of Oliver’s early troubles. The mysterious Monks, actually Oliver’s halfbrother, seeks Fagin’s aid in driving the boy into some crime, it having developed that Oliver is the heir to a largo fortune, the ono condition of which is that he shall reach the ago of twenty-one without having committed fin act which will bring him into public disgrace. Otherwise the fortune goes to Monks. Nancy Sikes, wife of Bill Sikes, the burglar, discovers Oliver on an errand for Brownlow and, kidnapping him, returns him to Fagin’s attic. Sikes is then brought into the scheme to make the boy a criminal. He takes Oliver in a burglary expedition, but the boy is able to warn the inmates of the house although in doing so he is shot by Sikes. The people take Oliver in and care for him. On hearing his story they convey him to Brownlow, who brings the attention of the police to Fagin and Sikes. Brownlow, while knowing all about the boy’s fortune, does not know Monks is behind the plot. When the raid is made Oliver points out the mysterious Monks—a title adopted for the underI world —and the man is forced to confess. Sikes in an attempt to escape from the roof-top is hanged, while Fagin meets the same end administered by law. Oliver remains with Brownlow, who now acts as his guardian, until such time as he inherits the fortune.
