FIRES AT BANK MANAGER

SENSATION AT NEWMARKET EXCITING CHASE AND ARREST [Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 6. A sensational arrest was made in Broadway, Newmarket, about 9 o’clock this evening, when a masked man, who had stationed himself in tho doorway of the Newmarket branch of the Auckland Savings Bank, fired a shot through the open door shortly before closing time. The man was seen in the doorway [ shortly after 8.30 and when tho shot was fired the bank officials immedi- : ately gave chase, and a largo crowd [ set off in pursuit. The man eluded | capture for some distance, and had al- : most disappeared through tho crowd when two civilians brought him down He was masked, and carried a revolver : v»hich contained two live cartridges and one recently fired. lie was handed to the police, who had joined in the chase, and on being taxon to tho police station was identified as George Joseph Marshall, aged LATER DETAILS A PLUCKY' BANK MANAGER AUCKLAND, Nov. 6. Later details of the Newmarket sensation show that the man secreted himself behind the door and when the manager, Mr Gilmour, went to close up .Marshall held him up. Marshall evidently expected Mr Gilmour to surrender, but instead the manager promptly tackled him. Marshall tried to run away, with Mr Gilmour still hanging to him, and when labout thirty yards up the street Marshall turned and fired at Gilmour, missing him. The bullet struck tho footpath. Several taxi-drivers from a nearby stand rushed to the scene, and grappled with Marshall, who resisted with great force, considering his small statue and age. It took about ten minutes before tho revolver was finally wrested from him.
