TANKS AND ARTILLERY
REBELLION SMASHED ALL DAY BOMBARDMENT 15,000 REINFORCEMENTS ASKED FOR. Received October 21, 10.15 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 20. The rising in Damascus has ended. Local notables agreed to pay a large fine and surrender several thousand rifles. The “Daily Mail’s’’ Paris correspondent reports that the French garrison of Damascus smashed the Druses’ rebellion with guns and tanks. Parties of Druses, helped by the majority of the Moslem population, barricaded the native quarter and started looting and burning in various districts under French control momentarily confined to public buildings. The French military governor thereupon ordered the field artillery to shell the native quarters throughout the day. Subsequently, tanks demolished the barricades.
The insurgents are still holding a few isolated districts. They have despatched emissaries, asking terms. Meanwhile, tho Damascus-Beirut railway is interrupted. The French have asked Paris for 15,000 reinforcements.
