HOUSING AND HEALTH
In a special Alcohol number of “Tho Practitioner,’* the leading monthly medical journal in Great Britain, is an article on the Social Aspects of the Liquor Problem, contributed by Sii Arthur Newsholme, K.CJB., AI.D., F.R.C.P., late Principal Medical Officer Local Government Board; Crown Nominee on General AledicaJ Council; and Lecturer on Public Health, John Hopkins’ University, etc., who says of drink expenditure in Great Britian, which in 1924 was £316,000,000: “The amount spent on drink, to take another illustration, would have paid the rental of every house, farm, shop, factory, and estate in Great Britain. Evidently, then, there need be no housing problem were there no drink problem.” Sir Arthur further says: “The Royal Commission on Venereal Diseases (1916) summed up as follows:—Abundant evidence was given as to the intimate relation between alcohol and venereal disease. Decrease in the use of alcohol will be an important factor in diminishing the prevalence of venereal disease.” 15
