NOTES AND COMMENTS
Gay Comet, who performed well in hack events at the country meetings last season, will in future be trained at Ellerslie by C. Coleman. On one occasion last autumn Gay Comet ran well in a seven-furlong open event at Ellerslie and, as ha is still a hack, should win more races this season. W. Jones has been engaged to ride Phoenix Park. Oreum, Motley. Royal Mint, and Lackland at the Wellington Spring meeting.
Count Cavour has not been set any severe tasks since he returned to Riecarton from the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting, but, states “Argus,” he looks none the worse for his exertions, and T. 11. Gillett will soon have him moving along again in fast work to complete his preparation for important engagements at Riccarton next month. His admirers need not be alarmed over his disappointing form at Wingatui. as he ha s * never been partial to soft ground, and he will be a different horse on the firm track that is likely to be available at Riccarton. Tiff has been on the easy list since he returned to Riccarton from Wingatui. The Martian gelding has been unlucky throughout his racing career, and a break in his present preparation must seriously affect his prospects for approaching engagements. Gladys Lillian, winner of the fillies ’ division of the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes at Flemington early this month, is by Swift Flight from Cherry Roe, by Penury—Erey Roe. Swift Flight is an English horse standing in the Auckland Province. He is by St. Martin from Maxima, by Ayrshire, and was foaled in 1917. Glentruin seems to be going along all right at Riccarton, for she is reported to have galloped over three furlongs in brilliant style last week. If she is anything near her best form at Riccarton next month she will carry some confidence. Air R. A. McKenzie was unfortunate having his nominations for the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting missed. As a result, Sun art and Clandhu may be short of a couple of much-needed races before they visit Riccarton next month and neither of them is likely to be at his best by New Zealand Cup day. Rapine will attract a lot of attention at the Wellington Raring Club’s Spring meeting. Taking a line through his form in the Avondale Cup, in which hr finished fourth, it seems only a question of health for this good Martian gelding to win some big stakes during the next few months. Penman is now in evidence at Trentham. where he is being get ready for his engagements in connection with the Spring venture of th*' Wellington Racing Club next Saturday and Monday. Marchaway is the name that has been selected for the two-year-old sister to Queen March and Lucius. Another relative is that sterling performer, Te Kara, who is a half-brother by General Latour.
Rational, who, during his two and three-year-old period on the running path, captured stake money amounting to 5465 sovs., and who was seen out in action at the Whangarei meeting, but had no luck, was offered for sale after the meeting, but the best offer was 250 guineas, and the son of Absurd and Cowl did not change ownership.
The total of the A.J.C. Derby stake, including breeder’s premium of 400 sovs., was 9323 sovs. Of this sum the owner of Manfred collected 6523 sovs., and one of the overhead charges in connection with the matter was £326 3s that W. Duncan received for his jockey’s percentage for piloting the winner, which works out at about £135 a minute. The Southland crack Listening Post was obviously not nearly at his best when he raced at the recent meeting at Wingatui. yet he put up a fine performance in the Mosgiel Handicap. There is some talk of sending him to Auckland for the Christmas meeting at Ellerslie. t. upidon broke down badly on Wednesday morning and is r.ot likely to be seen the course agalo. A cable from London states that the King has sold five racehorses for 2140 guineas. Mr J. B. Reid, the New Zealander, purchased Weathervane for 620 guineas. Weathervane as a two-year-old in 1923 won the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, and is a high-class horse. He is by Lemberg—Vain Air. F. Ponton, a pony jockey in New South Wales, met with a peculiar accident recently. He had the mount on Alzone in the Flying Handicap at Pokolbin. Just as the barrier rose Ponton noticed that one of the other horses in the race, which was alongside his mount, had its mount wide open. The jockey ducked his head to miss the animal, but just as he did so Alzone swerved, and Footon's head loged in the open mouth. Although he wore a skull cap. the teeth pierced it, and inflicted several cuts. Penton was treated by the ambulance, but was not in a fit state to ride during the remainder of the day.
