CANTERBURY MARKETS.
(Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 24. An easy tendency noted in the mid-week report in the value of potatoes has developed. To-day’s price is lower than a week ago by £1 a ton and the present f.o.b.s.i. quotations tare £7 for prompt and a few shillings more for August-September. The Waihora will leave to-morrow evening with over 12,000 sacks. The Wingtatui follows with Oamaru and Timaru potatoes early in the week, but will take no Lyttelton potatoes. Digging had been restricted on the drier soils, but to-day’s break will again cause *a general cessation. Present prospects are not favourable for the Speedy resumption of deliveries. Oats arc about the dullest section of the trade. Buyers are exceedingly scarce and lany business transacted is on an easy basis. B Gartons have ben sold at 3s lid and A’s at 4s 4d. with no buyers at Ihe latter figure. Canterbury Algerians are going north in fair-sized quantities and this class seems to be fully meeting northern feed requirements. The destructive fire in one of the big grain stares at Invercargill early in the month destroyed a big quantity of pcrennilal rye grass, raughly about 6000 sacks, practically all of the best grade quality. Values have firmed partly as the result of this and sales have been mb de at 6s a bushel. All other classes of seeds are keeping firm in value, but there is very little business doing. A shipment of wheat has arrived in Auckland from Australia, hut the maritime strike has affected the arrival of any so far to the south.
