BACK TO 9 P.M. CLOSING ON FRIDAYS. A complete settlement was reached ' at a conference held between the Wei lington Master Grocers and the Wei- ; lington Grocers’ Assistants’ Union, iu regard to the terms of a new award to replace the existing award, which expires at the end of this month. The I main features of the new award will be the restoration of 9 o’clock closing on the late night—Friday—instead of the present, closing hour of 8.30 p.m. It is stated that this change was made .on the initiative of the union. Tn reI turn the employers have conceded a ; closing hour of 12.30 on the half-day 1 instead of 1 o’clock. I Wages have been fixed on a new 'basis —age and experience being the . determining factors, in lieu of age I alone, as at present. The minimum 1 rate for an assistant 23 years of ago I will be. £4 12s 6d. The current rate is £4 ss. Other conditions will mainly follow the lines of the existing award. Tim 1 term is for two years and the award (will eovor the whole of the Wellington district. Steps are being taken forthwith to secure an award in terms of the settlement.
