TONGARIRO PARK

MEETING OF BOARD HEATHER TO BE ERADICATED (Per Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, Feb. 25. A full meeting of the Tongariro National Park Board was held yesterday at Waimarino, including Mr McLeod, Minister of Lands. The question of the hostel site was re-opened by Mr W. Salt, who moved in acordauco with a notice of motion. (1) “ That the previous resolution of the Board in favour of the Haunted Whare /site for the proposed hostel be rescinded; (2) “that the Whakapapa site be chosen instead.’ Mr T. A. Blyth. seconded the motion. After a lengthy discussion the first section of Air Salt’s motion was carried, Air J. Cullen and Air J. 8. Collett dissenting. Sir J. Gunson then moved: “That Air Salt amend the second section of his motion to read that the Government Architect be requested to report on the sites between Whakapapa river crossing and Whakapapa huts site, with a view to selecting a site of commanding and open position.” Air Salt agreed to the alteration. Sir J. Gunson seconded the | motion, which was carried, Air Blyth dissenting. The chairman, Air J. B. Thompson, submitted tentative plans of the hostel prepared by the Government Architect, the building to comprise a hundred rooms and to cost £54,000. The chairman said there would be no other hostel to compare with it in Australasia. It was resolved, on the motion of Sir J. Gunson, seconded by Air J. S. Collett, that tho Government Architect report to the Board, with plans adapted to the site recommended by him. The question of heather also provoked a lengthy discussion. Evenutally Air li. A. Wright moved: “That the board is of opinion that the heather now growing on the Park should be eradicated.” Dr. Marshall seconded. Air J. Cullen, Park Warden, said it was impossible to eradicate the heather now planted and growing in the Park. Air A. D. AlcLeod said the eradication would be a tremendous expense. The motion was carried the voting being as follows: —For —■ Wright, Field, Heulieu, Salt, Blyth, Turner and Marshall; against—Gunson, | AlcLeod, Cullen, Simpson, Collett and Thompson. Sir J. Gunson moved and Air Field seconded: “That the Board approve of the leasing of suitable areas of the Park for the building of small bunga lows in terms of the Act and on conditions approved by the Board. A copy of the report on this matter, prepared by Sir J. Gunson and Mr Cullen, to be circulated to members and consider cd at the next meeting, and that a preliminary survey be authorised.” The motion was car-.cd unanimously
