PATEA NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council Was held on Monday evening last. His Worship the Mayor, Mr P. S. Finlayson, presiding. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Whiteford and Lane. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and correspondence dealt with. Mr Partridge wrote applying for shop lately occupied by Mr D. Jones I and offering to take a lease of the I property. The Mayor pointed out [ that before a lease of the property i could be considered the place would I have to be put up either for tender |or auction. After discussion it was decided to interview Mr Partridge on the matter'and explain the position to him. The Mayor said he had received complaints about boxthorn and furze overgrowing the footpaths in Leicester Street. It was resolved to notify property owners responsible for the nuisance to remove same forthwith. Mr C. J. Gardiner was appointed Building Inspector, vice Mr M. Casey, resigned. The Mayor reported that he did not think the gravel 'from Locker’s pit suitable for the roads, it being too soft. Cr. Watson, on behalf of the school committee, asked that a crossing be put down in front of Memorial Gates, the committee bearing all cost of same. —Agreed to. The Borough solicitor was instructed to take necessary proceedings for collection of rates in arrears. The special committee set up for the purpose reported that the section from which the old studio had recently been removed should be cleared of all rubbish and the board fence now around’ a portion of the section should be continued to the library and the present old picket fence in front of the library to be removed. Cr. Jones considered that it would be just as cheap to erect an iron fence as a board one, with the. added advantage of longer service. It was decided to call for alternate tenders for erection of fence in wood or iron, to be in by next meeting of the council, and in the meantime the borough staff to clear rubbish from the section. Cr. Ramsbottom brought up the question of utilising a portion of the section at the Town Hall site as a playground for children, the section to be fitted up on similar lines to the playgrounds in some of the other towns. Cr. Jones agreed with the project but thought it better to look at other sections before fixing on the site. Cr. Peacock thought it would be better to spend the money in making a decent road to the Heads as he considered a play on the sands was far more beneficial to the children. After further discussion it was decided to hold the matter over for the present. The meeting was adjourned.
