DURIE HILL
IMPROVEMENTS FOR SUBURB. CITY COUNCIL’S DECISION. The following report, with reference to improvements at Durie Hill, was adopted by the Wanganui City Council last, evening without any discussion: — The committee has received from the Durio Hill Ratepayers’ Association a list, of works for consideration, and the following are the recommendations thereon: — Durie Street footpath on western side.—That this work be proceeded with. Stark Street and Portal Street corner.—The only way to improve this corner is by acquiring land for tho purpose, and at present the committee has no recommendation.
Park Avenue to connect with Hutchinson Street. —The engineer has been asked to ascertain the cost of tho land required and the necessary road formation. Surfaceman to replace gang work at intervals.—The engineer has been instructed to put a permanent man on in this suburb.
Water Supply.—The committee recommend the Council to purchase the land on Bastia Hill (over which it has an option) for tho erection of the water tower, and that the engineer prepare plans and specifications for the construction of same, tenders to bo called within two months. Durie Vale footpaths.—ln view of the narrow roads in this valley the committee has no recommendation to make with regard to the footpaths. Portal Street and Webb Road junction.—The engineer is attending to the footpath at this point. Right-of-way, Durie Street to Garden Suburb.—The engineer is ascertaining the cost of procuring this and of making a right-of-way. Street Lighting. —The committee report that provision is being made for properly lighting this suburb with 58 electric lights, as against 28 gas lamps at present.
