MEAT INDUSTRY ENCOURAGEMENT

SYDNEY, July 1. The Select Committee appointed to consider the proposed Meat Encouragement Bill decided to give it their support. The Government will ibe asked to introduce the Bill at an early date. It provides that a levy be imposed on horned stock of one penny per head, with an exemption up to one hundred in case of any one owner. The levy on sheep is to be one-sixth of a penny, with exemption up to five hundred. The committee recommend that the tenure of members of the board to be set up be limited to five years, unless Parliament decides to renew their appointment for a further period. The opinion is expressed that, unless something is done by way of organisation of the cattle industry, it will, in whole or part, die out.
