CASTLECLIFF BEACH

IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY JJEETS. ANOTHER GALA TO BE HELD. The old Castlecliff Beach Improvement Committee met last evening. Mr P. J. MacDavitt presided. It was je solved that the books and accounts of the old committee be audited, and that the assets and liabilities, as shown in the audited balance-sheet, be handed over to the new society. THE NEW SOCIETY. Mr A. H. Rogers presided over a fairly large meeting of members of the new society. In accepting the presidential chair, Mr Bogers thanked the members for having elected him. He knew that the position he had taken up would mean a lot of hard work, which he was not going to shirk. He had always striven for the best interests of Castlecliff, and he was prepared to put his shoulder to the wheel and help the new Improvement Society to get what it was after, lie had the Mayor’s assurance that in a very short time the Citv Council would undertake the work of claying the playing areas. This would relieve the society of a great responsibility. In any attempt to improve Castlecliff Beach they were battling against nature. The conditions there were different from those existing in other parts of the city, and in view of all the circumstances, the old Improvement Committee was to be complimented upon the heruclcan task it had set out upon. “I hope,’’ concluded Mr Kogers, “that in the work ahead, every Castlccliff resident will lend a hand.’’ (Applause.) ANOTHER GALA. It was suggested that another gala be held at Christmas time. The chairmam supported the idea, ns did practically every member pre sc . t. On the motion of Mr Cornish, it was decided to hold a two days’ gala on December 26 and 27. The following sub committees were elected with power to add:— Sports: Messrs Gumbley, H. Cooper, C. L. Cornish and J. D. Morris. Amusements: Messrs Beadle, Haszard, R. Brown, N. Tyler, R. Howe, Threadgold, and Howard. Ladies.—Mesdamcs Mill, Bea 3 it, Bull, C. Membership.—Messrs Dixon, Coop ?r, Beadle, Learmonth, Howe, and Threadgold. Mr Beadle stressed the necessity for planting trees in various streets in Castlecliff, especially along at the breakwater end. The chairman said that the idea was good, and the Beautifying Society would do everything possible to assist. Trees had been planted before, but proper care had not been taken of them. The matter was deferred for discussion at next meeting. It was resolved to appoint a permanept grounds committee, to supervise the placing apparatus and the general state of the playing areas. Messrs Di£_• n, Learmonth, Threadgold, and Howe were appointed as members of this committee.
