ALLIANCE OF LABOUR

DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 30. What the Minister of Labour described as some old friends were introduced to him,by a deputation from the Alliance of Labour, which sought var - ous amendments of the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The deputation asked that when a union cancelled its registration under the Arbitration Act and registered under another Act, another union could not be registered except by a ballot of members. Easier means of appealing to the Arbitration Court against fines for breaches of award were also wanted. It was urged that something be done to prevent an employer retaining the services of an employee without payment, as happened with watersiders who were not allowed to accept otner work when working broken time. Provision should also be made for the registration of only one union in an industry. The Minister said he would consido 1 . the matters raised, and concluded by stating that there would be legislate i I in regard to industrial matters this session. SHEARERS’ ACCOMMODATION. (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 30. A request that the Shearers’ Accommodation Act be more strictly enfmsad was made by the Alliance of Labour to the Minister of Labour. The deputation asked that inspectors visit stations' before and not after the season. It was requested that provision be made for hot and cold baths, better dining and seating accommodation and something to improve the lot of Maori shearers. The Act should be made to apply to all cases where less than five shearers were employed, which at present it did not. Improvements were also wanted in regard t/ the killing pens. The Minister promised to make inquiries.
