U.S. PRESIDENCY

THE DEMOCRATIC VENTION KU KLUX KLAN AND LEAGUE OF NATIONS NEITHER ISSUE INCLUDED IN PLATFORM. NEW YORK, June 29. The Democratic platform will not single out the Ku Klux Klan by name and it will not contain the Wilsonian plank covering the League of Nations, according to decisions reached early this morning after a 10-hour session, which developed some of the most disorderly scenes in Convention history. The poll on the Klan question was conducted amidst ill-feeling engendered by weariness and deafening confusion. The faction against naming the Klan won by 542 to 541 votes. Mr Baker’s perfervid appeal to honour the name of the late President Wilson by adopting his League of Nations policy was defeated by 742 to 453. The complete platform was then adopted by acclamation, amidst indescribable din, and the Convention adjourned. DEMOCRATS SPLIT THE PARTY PRESIDENT COOLIDGE ELECTED. Received June 30, 7.55 p.m. (Reuter). NEW YORK, June 29. The net result of Saturday’s session of the Democratic Convention was to create dissension within the ranks of the party and release a flood of religious hatreds, likely to cause riot and bloodshed in many sections of the country during the campaign, and furnish the party’s adversaries with. much campaign material. According to impartial observers, the nomination is not worth, a penny now. “As a result of the Ku Klux Klan quarrel they elected President Coolidge on Saturday night,” is a statement heard on all sides.
