On the centre court there was f thrilling first round match in the doubles, the Americans, Washburn and Williams, defeating the Frenchmen, Borotra and Lacoste 5—7, 6—3, 4—6, 6—4, 6—3. Then the South African, Raymond, brilliantly disposed of Brug non, after a terrific struggle over five sets. Lycctt and Godfrey beat Aitkea and Ingram 6—-0, 6 —3, 4 —6, 4—(j Other third round singles winners included the Britisher, Gilbert, Spence (Africa), Jacob (India), Watt (Austra lia), Richards (America). Ladies Doubles.—Mdlle. Lenglen and Misi Ryan beat Misses Wills and Wightmai (American), scoring an easy victory. Seen after his victory over Hunter. Brookes was greatly elated. He said: “I was tremendously bucked up, my form surprising myself. I made a resolution some time ago to give up singles play, and I am not sorry I broke the resolution.” Brookes throughout played magnificently. Hunter, who is not stylish, possesses tremendous power. He declared it was the most sporting game he had ever played. The two chief hopes were eliminated. Lacoste defeated Gilbert 6—3, 6—3, 6—2, while Raymond outclassed Wheatley. Only Kingscote, who beat Jacob 6—3, 6—3, 6—3, is left of the prominent players. Borotra had a terrific battle, defeating Spence 6—2, 14—12, 3—6, (4—o. The Americans, Washburn and Williams, entered the fifth doubles of the second round. With brilliant play, Hunter and Richards defeated Brudnon and Foret 6—o, 5 —7, 6—l, 5—7, 6—l. In the first round, Lycett and Miss Ryan (holders) had a hard fight.
