At the conclusion of the first day’f play Englishmen were in the ascendant, though the Americans, Hagen and Smith, are well within striking distance of E. R. Whitcombe, of Camedown, who leads the field with 147. His second round of 70 equalled the course records. Other scores were: J. H. Taylor 149, Hagen 150, Smith 150, J. Sherlock 151, Hunstanton 151, Holland 152, Duncan 153, Boomer 153, Nicholls 153, Gadd 154, Barnes 155, Tolley 155, Hard 155, Havers 156, Mitchell 158, Sarazen 158, Braid 160, Ray 160, Wcthered 167. A THRILLING FINISH. HAGEN’S LION-HEARTED EFFORT. Received June 29, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, June 28. Fifteen thousand witnessed a thrilling finish. Hagen made a dogged fight after the first round of 74. He took 41 going out in the second round, and then came the news of Whitcombe ’? 302. Hagen made a lion-hearted cf fort and played superbly on the homo ward half, which he had to do in 36 He took 4,4, 4,3, 4,4, 5,4, 4. The ex citement was intense for the last twe holes. He had a nice lie off the fairway of the seventeenth, and played & beautiful iron shot, missed a three-yard putt for three and drove just over the green. On the eighteenth he was 2J yards short with his third, but holed out amidst a terrific ovation. Other score were: Nicholls and Herd 310, Tolley and Braid 314, Havers 3J7, Ray 319, Sarazen 323. Mitchell retired on the third round. C. Whitcombe was disqualified for playing a wrong ball. Then came MacDonald, Smith, and Frank Ball 304, J. H. Taylor 307, Duncan, Holland and Boomer, 308, Sherlock, Barnes, Todd and Weston 309.
