A STALE CHARGE
LONDON, June 24. Sir Derrick Wernher, a son of Lady Ludlow, who was arrested and charged with perjury, alleged to have been committed during bankruptcy proceedings in May 1912, has been discharged. The prosecutor intimated that one of the two informants had died in 1918, consequently he would be unable to proceed with the case. Defendant’s counsel declared that! the only point at issue was the French money-lender’s statement, to which he had a perfect corroborated answe.-.
(The accused was declared bankrupt in 1912. His father, a famous South African magnate, left him £l2OO a year, while between the ages of twentyfive and thirty, and £2400 a year thereafter. The sum of £150,000 was placed in trust for his children. The accused’s younger brothers were bequeathed a million ’and £1,500,000
