FIRE.
AT STRATFORD. STRATFORD, June 9. Serious damage to a Broadway property was averted by the Fire Brigade early on Sunday morning, when the office of Mr. Horner, civil engineer, above Lewer's drapery shop, was found to be on fire. Prompt action confined the fiimes to Horner’s room, which was gutted. Lewer’s stock was considerably dameaged by smoke and water. The insurances were: On the building (owned by Lewer’s) £lOOO. and stock £5OOO. in the Royal; and Horner’s stock, £45, in the Royal Exchange. AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE, June 9. The Roseland Hotel at Makaraka, an old landmark, was destroyed by fire early this morning, the licensee getting his wife and family out with somo difficulty. A dwellinghouse and baker’s shop nearby were also destroyea. AT NEW PLYMOUTH. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 9. A six-roomed house on Junction Road, four miles from New Plymouth, was destroyed by fire on Sunday morning. It was owned by Mr. John Hale, and was unoccupied- It was valued at £750, and was insured for £5OO.
