U.S.A. CONGRESS

ENDS sax months; session. WASHINGTON, June 8. Congress ended a six months’ session automatically at 7 e’clock. Senators and representatives fought a last desperate battle to relieve the farmers. Many measures, including a Bill authorising the construction of cruisers, the modernising of battleships, and an Appropriation Bill, carrying funds to begin the operation of the bonus law and other purposes, failed iiR-the final crush of legislation. A special resolution was passed in the last five minutes by the House to make the bonus appropriation available. but it was lost in the Senate. Republican leaders declared that only a special session of Congress could provide funds for the initial costs of the bonus. WORK OF SESSION. WASHINGTON, June 7. Legislation approved by President Coolidge at the wind-up of Congress included the Foster Bill, creating a Commission to select a site for a national penal institution for women, the first of its kind ever authorised by Congress; the appointment of a Senate Committee to sit during the election campaign and investigate expenditures of candidates for the offices of President and Vice-Presi-dent and for Congress and Federal offices. Authorised by the Senate, the Salary Increase Bill was vetoed by Mr. Coolidge, with the declaration that “Government extravagance must stop.” The Bill made no provision for raising the 68,000,000 dollars necessary from the postal revenue.

Congress passed, and President Coolidge signed, a special bill admitting immigrants detained owing to tne recent Supreme Court ruling.
