TRAMS FOR ST. JOHN’S HILL

A conference was held on Saturday between a number of St. John’s Hill ratepayers, the president and secretary of the Wanganui Ratepayers’ Association on the one hand and the Mayor and the Borough Solicitor on the other.

“The Wanganui Borough Council Special Rate Empowering and Enabling Act, 1924,” was the subject of the discussion owing to the objection raised by St. John’s Hill ratepayers to the vote for trams to the suburb being cut out. Mr. Treadwell fully explained the legal position and assured those present that the passing of the Act would in no way affect the position of the St. John’s Hill tramway, as in the future, when it was found necessary to go on with it there would be ample money for the purpose.

At the conclusion of the conference those St. John’s Hill ratepayers who were present expressed themselves as satisfied with the Mayor’s and with the Borough Solicitor’s explanations, and it was agreed that there would not be a deputation from the Ratepayers’ Association to wait on the Council on this subject.
