EMPIRE EXHIBITION

WAITRESSES ON STRIKE. LONDON, May 5. The Dally Herald says that a number of Lyons’ waitresses at the Empire Exhibition have left owing to dissatisfaction with the conditions. The organiser of the Workers’ Union states that some received only 15s weekly ftom which they had to pay 4s 4d railway tares. On the other hand, Mr. Lyons states that many waitresses make 15s is two days, but he does not indicate whether this represents tips. Another effort to obtain labour for the Exhibiton at wages which disgrace the Empire met With no response. The Labour Exchange was asked for 32 women cloakroom attendants, the workling hours being from 8 in the morning to 11 at night, with no free meals, the pay to be 15s per week. It was not surprising that women emphatically refused such an offer.
