Twenty-six insurance companies have commenced payment of 10 per cent, on policies held by the losers in the Japanese earthquakes and fires. There are great crowds at each office. The distribution involves 8,000,000 yen, borrowed from the Government. Most of the money will be immediately reinvested on permanent construction, for which permits will be issuable on June 1. A Portuguese captain and an Indian guard in a motor boat going to Kongmoon from Canton were shot dead by pirates disguised as passengers at midnight on May 1. The pirates kidnapped forty passengers after looting the vessel. The new Socialist Government in Denmark has suggested an Anglo-Dan-ish exchange of agricultural labour, with a view to improving both nations’ knowledge of farming.
