WOODEN SHIPS’ CASE

THE COMMONWEALTH’S CLAIM Received March 26, 8.55 p.m. NEW YORK, March 26. The Australian Government retained George Wickersham, who was the United States’ Attorney-General under President Taft, to argue the Commonwealth wooden ship ease before the Supreme Court. Mr Wiekersham helped to secure the original writ of certiorari. The date for the rehearing has not yet been arranged, and it is not known how soon it will be fixed. The ship company’s failure to secure a writ in a cross-appeal to make the arbitrators’ award stand as a judgment is considered an important victory for the Commonwealth, because even if the Commonwealth should lose the present case before the Supreme Court, the ship company would be compelled to take its claims through the whole gamut of the lower court before securing judgment.
