CASTLECLIFF TOWN BOARD.

The final meeting of the Castlecliff Town Board was held last evening in the Town Hall. Present: Commissioners Body, Cuthbertson, Beadle' and Rogers. Cr. C. H. McKenzie (chairman) wrote apologising for his absence. All business in connection with amalgamation with the borough having been disposed of at the previous meeting, the chief item of interest was the selection of three commissioners to represent Castlecliff on the Borough Council. Crs. Beadle, Cuthbertson and Superintendent Rogers were elected. The business of the evening having been dispensed with, the board entertained the employees and fire brigade at a smoke concert, members of the Gonville Town Board and other local bodies being present. In the absence of the chairman, the guests were welcomed by Superintendent Rogers. A fine programme by some of Wanganui’s leading artists was greatly appreciated, the following gentlemen contributing: Messrs Geo. Swan, Bob Howell, Paul Latham, c. Spillane, H. V. Duigan, H. East, H. Anderson, C. Jensen and P. Mephain. Mr Mepham accompanied the various items in his usual efficient manner. The first toast of the evening was that of the Town Board staff, proposed by Mr T. W. Cuthbertson, who spoke in very eulogistic terms of the manner in which the staff had carried out their various duties while under the jurisdiction of the board. Mr T. Bourne, secretary, very ably responded. Mr Gumbley (engineer) also spoke. Mr Lett (foreman to the Town Board) also spoke, expressing thanks on behalf of the employees for the enjoyable evening.

Superintendent Williams, of the Wanganui Fire Brigade, in proposing the toast of the Castlecliff Volunteer Fire Brigade, expressed his appreciation in taking over the charge of such a fine body of men, whose efficiency was already so well known, which in itself was a great tribute to the ..retiring superintendent. Mr Rogers feeling responded on behalf of the brigade.

Among the many other toasts of the evening was that of Superintendent Williams, who, in his reply, briefly outlined the policy of the Fire Board as regards future improvements, etc. with reference to Gonville and Castlecliff. The toast, “Castlecliff Town Board,” proposed by Mr C.. Pearce (chairman of Gonville Town Board) coupled with the names of Messrs Cuthbertson, Rogers and Beadle, was enthusiastically received, and drank with musical honours, the gentlemen mentioned all replying in feeling terms. The singing of the National Anthem brough a most enjoyable function to a close.
