FAKE PHYSICIANS
A NEW ASPECT INEFFICIENCY IN REGULAR PROFESSION (By Telegraph—Press Association——Copyright. Received March 6, 8.30 p.m. NEW YORK, March 5. A telegram from Chicago says that the fake physicians scandal took a curious turn when Dr. Codman, a noted Boston surgeon, addressing a convention of surgeons here, declared that there were 7000 hospitals United States and 550,000 patiemts annually, but although this was the age of hospitals most of them were inefficient. An investigation into the treatment of 400 cases of sarcoma was conducted by ten men with degrees and apparently adequate legitimate professional training. It showed that practically every one represented a mistake in diagnosis. Legs were amputated when they should not have been, and patients died without the operating sur- 1 geons knowing whether they should have lived or died. Dr. Codman, while bemoaning charlatanry among individuals posing as legitimate physicians, condemned even more strongly inefficiency among the ranks of legitimate pathologists, surgeons and physicians.
