A. young married couple who arrived from England on June 15 had an eventful reception. On the morning after landing they awoke at six o’clock to hud a frowsy woman sitting on the end of the bed of vhe boardinghouse, wearing the wife’s hat and coat. The wife’s brother was also a victim of a lightfingered intruder, Masonic papers, military discharge, and £3 13s in money being missing from the pocket’of a garment which was outside in a passage in which the frowsy woman was hovering about. A search revealed the missing papers and money; but the young couple were 1.-ss fortunate, for their juggage tickets had disappeared. Three days later the frowsy woman and another presented tickets at the railway, station, but the official was suspicious, with the result that this morning .Magistrate McKean sentenced Julia Griffin, aged 33, tne woman who was on the bed, and Eliza Wilson Carswell, aged 39,4bach to one month’s imprisonment for attempting to steal luggage to the value of £2O. Griffin was also sentenced to oib month concurrent for having stolen boots and shirts, valued at £2 10s, tho property of a person unknown, the theft of a cashbox valued at £2 9s 6d, and lour blankets valued at £5.
