Col. J. J. Esson, of the Treasury Department, is at present- visiting Wanganui. z The Rev. W. Grigg, pastor Of Trinity Methodist Church, has received an invitation for next year from the Blenheim circuit. A London cable states that Bri Ricardo, wMle Inspecting a reservoir at Strabane belonging to the company in which he was interested, fell in and was drowned. An interesting ceremony took place at the Fire Brigade Station last evening, when Fireman F. De Buisson was presented with a five years’ service medal. The presentation was made by Superintendent Williams on behalf of the Fire Board. The Governor-General held an investiture at Government House, Wellington, last evening. Hon. Edward Newman, of Marton was made a K.C.B. Among those decorated was Major John Robert Cade, M.C., of Wanganui, who received the Colonial Auxiliary Forces’ Officers’ Decoration. The funeral of Mr. Connor, a Victim of the Ongarue accident, took place at Mangatainoka Cemetery on Tuesday. The cortege was comprised of thirty motors and several traps attended from all sports institutions in Pahiatua, Puketoi, Rakaunui, Makuri, also the Railway Department and others. Resolutions of condolence were passed by tbe Borough Council and Foresters’ Lodge.—Press Association. Many Wanganui people will regret, to learn of the death, at Oamaru. on Friday last, of Mr. Richard John Clark, who was for many years a member of the local Telegraph Office staff. The deceased spent the greater portion of his life in Wanganui, and his genial nature made him liked by all who knew him. At one time h« was a prominent tennis player, and he took a keen interest in sport generally.
A cordial welcome to Wanganui was yesterday accorded to Mr. Vincent Evans, the new art master of the Wanganui Technical College. Mr. Evans, who arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday, came through from Wellington by yesterday afternoon's New Plymouth express. He was met at the College by the Principal of the College, Mr. Newton, and a number of Welsh friends, who gave their fel-low-countryman a hearty greeting and the assurance that he would find the welcome they gave him endorsed by the warm-hearted and hospitable people of the town and district. Mr. R. I. McGregor, who joins the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at Hawera, was tendered a farewell social by the Bulls Tennis Club last Monday evening, and a "smoko” by the Bulls Football Club and Sports Club on Wednesday. Mr. McGregor was presented with a solid leather travelling bag, silver shaving set, etc., and representatives of all classes spoke in the highest terms of the departing guest’s many fine qualities, expressing regret at hi? transfer and wishing him success in his new home. Mr. C. Purcell, of the Hawera branch of the Bank of New Zealand has taken Mr. McGregor i place at Bulls.
